To have more, you have to be more

Les Brown, an author, speaker, and entrepreneur, said, “Success is not what you get; success is what you become.” You do not get success; you become successful. Most people misunderstand this, which keeps them from climbing the success ladder.

With time, good things will come to all of us, but they come faster to those who become more. Sadly, we don’t have all the time on our side to receive all the good things in life. Hence, becoming more is the best chance to change things. Becoming more is a habit that you should do daily. This habit changes people from unsuccessful to successful.

To get promoted at work, someone must be more skilled, experienced, and valuable. They will get a higher salary, better benefits, more packages, and increased attention and influence at work. What the person has to do is become more.

To be more respected, a politician needs to be skillful, presentable, social, visionary, and reliable. That is where the influence, impact, popularity, and positions will be theirs for the taking.

Becoming is tough. It needs hard work, patience, virtue, and commitment. And sadly, that is not even a guarantee that it will work out the way you envisioned.

A gardener plants a Chinese bamboo tree, and it takes six years for the tree to grow above the ground. Then, after six years, it takes six weeks for it to grow to its full potential, which is huge. Now those first six years represent the process of becoming; no one observes anything. Those six weeks are the receiving process, all the growth and glory.

Most of us would quit on those six years of becoming. We’d lose our spirit, doubt our goals, and listen to naysayers. We might accept discouragement from family and friends. We will jump to something else that we see takes quickly to grow.

Successful people have understood the logic of life; you cannot bypass the process. They have accepted the fact that they have to be more, and to be more it takes time. They recognise the use of internal energy to keep growing without applause or notice.

To stay on the ground for six years when nothing happens. And they have learned to take the glory of their work in those six weeks like the Chinese bamboo trees.

To achieve anything you want in life, you must follow the journey to reach its full potential. You will need to become more patient and wait. That is why in every career, sport, or activity there are levels based on skills, value, or experience. Each level has a different reward.

There are interns, new joiners, juniors, seniors, managers, and experts in companies. At each level, individuals had to grow more, and they definitely have got more of everything.

In sports, we see juniors, rookies, amateurs, beginners, semi-pros, professionals, legends, and top superstars. They all had to excel in their field to earn more contracts, fame, influence, recognition, and rewards.

Choose your field, define the level that you want to be in and find ways to become more. Then let time be on your side. The beauty of life is that success leaves clues. This means someone has already achieved more in your field. Study them, understand them and follow the journey.

You will be more. And you will get more.
